If you don’t work in the roofing industry, you might not know some of the common terms that would be helpful when it’s time for a roof replacement.
The roofers from Alltimate Roofing bring decades of roofing experience, and we’re sharing some of the most common roofing terms that you should know when shopping for a new roof or even when becoming a homeowner for the first time.
Roofing Parts
- Decking (Sheathing): This base layer of the roof is usually made of plywood and covers the rafters.
- Rafters: These are sloped beams that form the framework of the roof and that support the decking.
- Underlayment: The underlayment is a water-resistant or waterproof layer that provides extra protection.
- Flashing: Flashing is made of thin metal sheets that are placed around chimneys, vents, and roof valleys to prevent water from seeping into these vulnerable areas.
- Fascia: This is the vertical board that runs along the edge of the roof and provides support to the lower edge of the shingles and the gutters.
- Soffit: The soffit is the underside of the overhang of the roof. It typically has ventilation that helps with airflow in the attic.
Roofing Materials
When you install a new roof, you’ll have your choice of several roofing materials. Some are better suited to certain styles of homes, and some, such as slate roofing, are too heavy for some homes. Your roofing specialist will be able to explain which roofing types are best for your home, so you can make an informed decision.
- Asphalt Shingles
- Metal Roofing
- Synthetic Roofing
- Wood Shake Shingles
- Tile Roofing
- Slate Roofing
Roofing Styles
These terms refer to some of the most popular roofing styles.
- A gable roof is a classic two-sloped roof that forms a triangle.
- A hip roof is a roof on which all sides slope downward.
- Flat roofs are nearly level and typically feature only a slight slope for drainage.
- A mansard roof is four-sided and has two slopes on each side.
